B2B Lead Generation Glossary

Plain-English definitions for 35+ terms used in B2B prospecting, email verification, and outbound sales — from ABM to warm leads.

A

ABM (Account-Based Marketing)
A B2B strategy where marketing and sales teams identify specific target accounts and tailor campaigns directly to those companies rather than casting a wide net. ABM typically produces higher conversion rates because messaging is highly relevant to each account's specific needs.
Bounce Rate (Email)
The percentage of sent emails that fail to deliver. A hard bounce is a permanent failure (invalid address or domain). A soft bounce is temporary (mailbox full, server down). High bounce rates damage sender reputation and can get your domain blacklisted.

B

B2B (Business-to-Business)
Transactions, relationships, or marketing efforts directed from one business to another. B2B sales cycles are typically longer and involve multiple decision-makers compared to B2C. Find-Lead is built primarily for B2B prospecting.
B2C (Business-to-Consumer)
Transactions or marketing directed from a business to individual end consumers. On Find-Lead, B2C industry pages show consumer-facing companies you may want to reach as a vendor or partner.
Buyer Persona
A semi-fictional profile of your ideal customer based on research and real data. It includes job title, company size, pain points, goals, and decision-making behavior. Personas help focus prospecting and messaging on the contacts most likely to convert.

C

Catch-All Domain
A domain configured to accept all incoming email regardless of whether the specific mailbox exists. SMTP verification cannot confirm individual address validity on catch-all domains — only that the domain accepts mail. These are flagged as "risky" rather than invalid in email verification results.
Cold Outreach
Contacting a prospect with whom you have no prior relationship. Cold email and cold calling are the two most common forms. Effective cold outreach is highly personalized, relevant to the recipient's role, and offers clear value in the opening lines.
CRM (Customer Relationship Management)
Software used by sales teams to track interactions with prospects and customers. Common examples include Salesforce, HubSpot, and Pipedrive. Leads found on Find-Lead can be exported and imported directly into most CRM systems.
Conversion Rate
The percentage of prospects who take a desired action — clicking a link, replying to an email, booking a call, or making a purchase. In outbound sales, a high-quality, verified lead list typically produces better conversion rates than a large unverified one.

D

Data Enrichment
The process of enhancing an existing contact or company record with additional information — such as job title, email address, phone number, company size, or revenue. Find-Lead performs enrichment by cross-referencing multiple public sources for each company and contact.
Decision-Maker
The person at a company with authority to approve a purchase or partnership. In B2B sales, identifying and reaching the actual decision-maker (rather than a gatekeeper) dramatically shortens the sales cycle. Common titles include CEO, VP, Director, and Head of department.
DNS (Domain Name System)
The internet's address book, translating domain names into server IP addresses. During email verification, DNS records (specifically MX records) are checked to confirm that a domain is configured to receive email at all.

E

Email Deliverability
The likelihood that an email reaches the recipient's inbox rather than landing in spam or bouncing. Deliverability is affected by sender reputation, bounce rate, spam complaint rate, email authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), and list quality. Verifying addresses before sending is one of the most effective ways to protect deliverability.
Email Verification
The process of confirming whether an email address is valid and able to receive messages. Verification checks syntax (correct format), domain (MX records exist), and SMTP deliverability (mailbox responds) without sending an actual message. Find-Lead's Email Checker performs all three steps.
Email Warm-Up
Gradually increasing sending volume from a new email account or domain to build sender reputation with email service providers before launching full campaigns. Sending to verified, engaged addresses during warm-up is critical to avoid triggering spam filters.

F

Firmographics
Descriptive attributes of a company used for B2B segmentation — industry, company size (headcount), revenue range, geographic location, and growth stage. Firmographic filters help narrow a prospect list to companies that match your ideal customer profile.
Follow-Up Sequence
A series of pre-planned emails or touches sent to a prospect after an initial outreach, spaced over days or weeks. Most replies in cold outreach come from follow-ups rather than the first email. A typical sequence contains 4–6 touches.

H

Hard Bounce
A permanent email delivery failure, typically because the address does not exist, the domain does not exist, or the recipient's mail server has permanently rejected delivery. Hard bounces should be removed from lists immediately. They are the primary target of email verification tools.

I

ICP (Ideal Customer Profile)
A detailed description of the type of company most likely to buy and benefit from your product or service. Defined by firmographics (industry, size, revenue, location) and behavioral signals. Used to focus prospecting on accounts that match — rather than reaching everyone possible.
Intent Data
Behavioral signals that suggest a prospect is actively researching a topic related to your product — such as visiting competitor websites, reading specific content, or searching for related terms. Intent data helps prioritize which accounts to contact first.

L

Lead
A person or company that has shown some level of interest in your product or service, or that fits the profile of a potential customer. Leads can be inbound (they contacted you) or outbound (you identified them as a good fit and initiated contact).
Lead Enrichment
Adding more context to a raw lead record — appending email addresses, phone numbers, job titles, company size, revenue, and social profiles. Enriched leads allow for more personalized outreach and better qualification before a sales call.
Lead Generation
The process of identifying and attracting potential customers. Outbound lead generation involves actively reaching out (email, calls, LinkedIn). Inbound lead generation involves attracting prospects through content, SEO, and advertising. Find-Lead supports the outbound discovery and verification steps.

M

MQL (Marketing Qualified Lead)
A lead that marketing has determined is more likely to become a customer based on engagement with content or campaigns — but has not yet been passed to sales. Contrast with SQL (Sales Qualified Lead), which sales has vetted and is actively pursuing.
MX Record
A DNS record that specifies which mail server handles email for a domain. Email verification tools check MX records to confirm a domain is configured to receive email before checking individual addresses. A domain with no MX records will produce hard bounces for every address.

O

Open Rate
The percentage of delivered emails that are opened by recipients. Average cold email open rates vary widely (20–50%) depending on subject line, sender reputation, and list quality. A clean, verified list typically produces higher open rates because fewer emails bounce.
Outbound Sales
A sales approach where the seller proactively initiates contact with potential customers. Outbound channels include cold email, cold calling, LinkedIn outreach, and direct mail. Outbound is distinguished from inbound, where the prospect initiates contact.

P

Prospect
A potential customer who fits your ICP and has been identified as worth contacting. Prospects become leads once there is evidence of interest or engagement. Building a targeted prospect list — by industry, company size, and geography — is the first step in most outbound campaigns.
Prospect List
A curated set of contacts and companies targeted for outreach. A high-quality prospect list is filtered by ICP criteria, enriched with accurate contact data, and verified to remove bad addresses before sending. Find-Lead helps build lists by industry, geography, and company size.

R

Reply Rate
The percentage of sent outreach emails that receive a response. Even a negative reply is useful data. Typical cold email reply rates range from 1–10% depending on targeting quality, personalization, and offer relevance. Verified email addresses are a prerequisite for meaningful reply rate data.

S

Sender Reputation
A score assigned to an email sender's domain and IP address by internet service providers. High bounce rates, spam complaints, and low engagement damage sender reputation over time and cause emails to be delivered to spam. Keeping lists clean with email verification is one of the primary ways to protect sender reputation.
Soft Bounce
A temporary email delivery failure — usually because the recipient's inbox is full, the mail server is temporarily unavailable, or the message exceeds size limits. Unlike hard bounces, soft bounces may resolve on retry and do not necessarily indicate an invalid address.
SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)
The standard protocol for sending email over the internet. During email verification, an SMTP handshake is performed with the recipient's mail server to test whether the mailbox will accept a message — without actually delivering one.
SQL (Sales Qualified Lead)
A prospect that has been evaluated by the sales team and determined to be ready for direct sales engagement. SQLs typically have a confirmed need, budget, authority, and timeline (BANT criteria). Compare with MQL, which is marketing-qualified but not yet sales-ready.

T

TAM (Total Addressable Market)
The total revenue opportunity available if a product or service achieved 100% market share. For B2B prospecting, TAM analysis helps estimate how many companies fit your ICP and what the maximum prospect list size could be for a given segment.
Touch (Outreach Touch)
A single point of contact in a sales sequence — one email, one call, one LinkedIn message. Multi-touch sequences spread contact across multiple channels and time periods to increase the likelihood of a response without overwhelming the prospect.

V

Verified Email
An email address that has been confirmed as syntactically valid, belonging to an active domain with working mail servers, and able to accept delivery. Find-Lead marks contacts as verified after passing all three stages of its validation pipeline.
VP of Sales / Head of Sales
Common decision-maker titles for companies evaluating sales tools, lead generation services, and CRM software. Reaching VP-level contacts directly — rather than going through a gatekeeper — shortens the sales cycle considerably.

W

Warm Lead
A prospect who has expressed interest in your product or service — by visiting your website, engaging with content, attending a webinar, or responding to prior outreach. Warm leads are further along the buyer journey than cold prospects and typically require fewer touches to convert.
Waterfall Enrichment
A data enrichment method that queries multiple data providers in sequence until a verified result is found. If the first source doesn't have a contact's email, the next is tried, then the next — until coverage is maximized. Find-Lead uses a similar multi-source approach to improve contact coverage across industries.
